How the conversion works
One inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, and one foot is 12 inches (30.48 cm). To convert a height like 5'10":
- Turn it into inches: 5 × 12 + 10 = 70 inches.
- Multiply by 2.54: 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm (or 1.78 m).
For centimeters to feet, divide by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12. The whole number is feet and the remainder is inches: 165 cm ÷ 2.54 = 64.96 inches, which is 5 feet and 5.0 inches.

According to CDC survey data, the average American adult man is about 5'9" (175 cm) and the average woman is about 5'3.5" (161 cm). Heights recorded in metric countries are usually given in whole centimeters, while US forms tend to round to the nearest inch, so a converted value may be a fraction of an inch off what you're used to seeing.
